ARAM (All Random All Mid) hands everyone a random champion and a single lane, and it is one of the most fun ways to play League — no dodging, no counter-picking, just constant fighting. But under the chaos there are clear habits that win games. Here is how to get consistently better at ARAM, and why practising random champions off the Rift makes you dangerous on it.
ARAM is one long teamfight — play as five
There are no side lanes to farm and no objectives to split for, so the single biggest mistake in ARAM is wandering off alone. The team that groups and fights together almost always wins, because a 5v4 in a choke point snowballs instantly.
Wait for your team before you take a fight, focus the same target, and never walk up alone to poke when your team is back at base — that is how you feed a free kill and a tower.
Poke and sustain decide most games
Because both teams are stuck in one lane, chip damage adds up fast. Champions who poke from range whittle the enemy down before a fight even starts, while healing and shielding let your team survive the return fire. Respect a heavy poke comp: do not sit in range of a Ziggs or Xerath with no way to heal it back.
Always grab the health relic that spawns in the middle of the lane, and share it with the lowest-health teammate. Buying a bit of sustain or magic resist against a poke comp often matters more than raw damage.
Positioning matters more than on Summoner’s Rift
The respawn walk in ARAM is long, so a single death can lose you the fight and the wave of pressure that follows it. There is nowhere to run — no flashing over a wall into your jungle — so where you stand at the start of a fight decides it.
Squishy champions should fire from the very back; frontliners should soak the first spells and start the fight. Do not facecheck the fog around the health relic, and hold your key summoner spells and abilities for the moment that actually wins the fight.
A wide champion pool is a real edge
You cannot dodge or trade a champion in ARAM — you play what you are given. That is exactly why a wide, comfortable pool is such an advantage: the player who has actually piloted their random champion before will crush the one first-timing it.
The champions above are great to learn for ARAM — long-range poke, team-wide sustain and a sticky frontline. Practising random champions in normal games (RandomPick makes that one click) means far fewer ARAM games where you have no idea what your kit does.
Quick ARAM checklist
Before your next Howling Abyss game, keep these in mind:
- Group and fight as five — never walk up alone.
- Grab the health relic and give it to the lowest-HP ally.
- Buy sustain or resistances against heavy poke.
- Position by range: squishies at the back, tanks in front.
- Widen your champion pool so no random pick is a first-time.
